During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
