Marnus Labuschagne Omitted from Australia's One-Day International Squad Versus India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, as high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a shock call-up.
Performance Issues Lead to Omission
Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI squad after scoring just one run in each of his two innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. Labuschagne has a highest score of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.
The batsman has featured in 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a return to the Test side in time for the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Updates
There have been indications of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his first white-ball appearance in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia search for a fix to their batting top-order problems.
Pace Returns and Injury Updates
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after being rested since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after being concussed in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to lead Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have announced a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist injury sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will captain both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to secure a 2-0 series win last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on 19 October in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
