{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with F1 safety personnel
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track directly in front of him
The dangerous situation took place on the third circuit when safety workers were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to swap his broken nose section
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"
"I exited on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes running across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track track officials can be permitted to just sprint across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"Following a turn one incident, track officials was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the regulatory authority
"In the third rotation, marshals were notified and made ready to enter the track and remove the wreckage once all cars had passed"
"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was shown in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what transpired after that point"
